Samira Cheshak: Novel Technologies for Chemical Modification of Biomass-Derived Molecules and Materials

Biomass is mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, which together form the structural components of plant cell walls. Among these components, lignin is one of the most abundant renewable aromatic biopolymers in nature. Despite its availability, lignin remains largely underutilized due to its complex and heterogeneous structure, and most industrial lignin is currently burned for low-value energy recovery.

This project aims to modify and valorize lignin into high-value materials and products for sustainable applications. Through chemical modification, lignin is converted into functional materials such as bio-based copolymers, coating adhesives, and epoxy resins that can partially replace fossil-derived chemicals and polymers. The research focuses on improving lignin reactivity, compatibility, and performance for advanced material applications while supporting biomass valorization and the transition toward sustainable and circular material technologies.
