Eemeli Toivanen: Engineering Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 for Sustainable Bioproduction from Hemicellulose Feedstocks

This project focuses on developing the bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 as a sustainable microbial platform for converting hemicellulose-derived hydrolysates into valuable chemicals. The primary objective is to enhance the ADP1 tolerance to inhibitory compounds commonly present in lignocellulosic hydrolysates, enabling efficient growth and substrate utilization.
To expand the production capabilities of ADP1, metabolic engineering strategies are employed to introduce non-native biosynthetic pathways and redirect cellular metabolic fluxes toward the synthesis of novel target compounds. By combining improved hydrolysate tolerance with tailored production pathways, the project aims to advance the use of renewable lignocellulosic feedstocks for sustainable biochemical production.
